Ex Keith Davignon. The unquestioned highlight of this extraordinary sale. In November 1993, nearly 33 years ago, I sold this dazzling 1815 to Keith Davignon. In August 2017 Keith allowed me to offer it in MB 45. When the turmoil wrought by savvy, competing bidders subsided, lot 15 found a new home for $20,680. In the description I observed that a majority of 1815s have been ill-treated with efforts to “improve” them. The Davignon coin, I said, is a breath of fresh air, a coin that will be remembered for years to come. Keith, of course, agreed. “Original!” is the one word he wrote when he placed a sticker on the PCGS capsule. I would have added, “A+ for eye-appeal.” The coin is encased in a patina of antique grey, electrically charged with infusions of gold, copper and related autumn colors. The lustrous, lightly clashed surfaces are nearly free of contact marks. In short, this is a coin for the ages. Early congratulations and a hearty handshake to the successful bidder! Estimate: $15,000 to $25,000.
