Ex Charlton Meyer, Jr. and Paul Gerrie. Charlton Meyer found this coin in Bowers & Merena’s July 2003 Baltimore ANA sale, lot 1455. I sold it to a private collector during the 2008 ANA Convention for $3,000 (sigh). It last appeared in Heritage’s August 2024 sale of Paul Gerrie’s collection, lot 3409, bringing $6,600. The coin is sensational. I have no quarrel with Heritage’s description, “Deep, iridescent toning spreads evenly across both sides, draping semi-reflective fields in umber, blue, and reddish-gold hues while pale-violet overtones add visual interest. The strike is sharp throughout.” Indeed, one’s first impression of the coin is that it is a proof or proof-like. Further examination reveals mint frost under the magnificent toning. The visual appeal of the coin is remarkable. Estimate: $5,500 to $7,000.
