Soft cartwheel luster and immaculate surfaces led to a bidding war when this rare die pair last appeared at auction. It took $5,368 to bring it home in Heritage’s sale #60508 of “Bust Coinage,” lot 15416. As I’ve said before (echoing Walter Breen), an R.5 bust half is caviar to knowledgeable die variety collectors and high grade pieces are peacock’s tongues. Here is a wonderful coin to test your palate – and measure your mettle in the face of formidable competition. Estimate: $3,000 and up.
