This charismatic rarity has long frustrated Red Book and die variety collectors. It is usually the last 1830 one needs to complete a set of 3 Red Book varieties or 23 die marriages. The traditionally soft impression (both dies saw prior use) confuses the grading services. This time PCGS got it right. Medium grey toning blankets the fields. The devices are lighter. The surfaces were lightly wiped. There is a tiny scootch under the first U in PLURIBUS, nothing serious. All-in-all, the coin is a wholesome representative of the sparse population. Estimate: $3,500 to $5,000.
