1795 -  Flowing Hair O.125 R.4 PCGS AU55

Ex Eugene Gardner. A spectacular coin, richly toned in shades of rose, gold and iridescent blue. The strike is first rate, with Liberty’s hair and lower curls well defined. There is a hint of weakness on the eagle’s breast, but all feathers are present, a pleasing exception to the rule for this issue. The adjoining wing feathers are bold. The untoned areas on the upper reverse correspond with miniscule impurities in the planchet that survived the refining process. They are of no consequence. For the collector of a high grade type set, here is a quintessential example of the scarce 2-year flowing hair design that comes with a distinguished provenance.

Ex Heritage’s October 2014 sale of the Gardner Collection, lot 98459 @ $22,325; earlier from Stack’s March 1998 sale as uncirculated, “with a trace of cabinet friction.” Est. $20,000 to $25,000.
