1814 - O.106a R.4 PCGS AU 50 CAC
The charismatic key to completing a die variety set of 1814s. The worn dies and formidable reverse die break are stark reminders of the early Mint’s insistence on using dies well into their dotage. This high grade example comes with soft luster and original antique grey toning, tinged with copper. A toning streak bisects the reverse, allowing the obverse to prevail in a contest for superior eye-appeal. Tim Osborne’s example, ex Don Frederick, was also graded by PCGS as AU 50 and endorsed by CAC; it brought $5,720 in MB 53, January 2022, lot 10. Enough said; expect competition. From the Kings Park Collection. Estimate: $3,500 and up.
