1828 Sq. Base 2, Sm.8s, Lg. Lets. - O.111 R.4+ PCGS AU 53 CAC
Among rare die pairs of the year, the 1828-111 is just behind the 1828 O.105 and 1828 O.123. John Torres found the coin in my August 2015 ANA Sale, MB 41, lot 66. I observed, Light grey with some color and iridescent toning at the peripheries. Soft luster throughout. Virtually no marks…. This is a “sleeper” R.4, especially in high grade. Be willing to stretch your bid. A plus sign has been added to the rarity rating since then. The coin brought $1,680 when Heritage sold Torres’ collection a year ago, identifying it as from The Towers Collection. It should do as well or better today. Estimate: $1,500 to $2,000.
